i think that he was never really happy with his role, leaving his planet in the first place, doing the work for the emperor he didnt really considered father... at least thats the expression i got

Before Emperor found Mortarion, Promarch wanted to slay a man, who treated him as a son since he came on Barbarus. He believed he's the only one who can do it, and when he reached the man' lair, toxic gasses turned out to be too poisonous even for him. Then' in the moment that was supposed to be Mortarion's great victory, the Emperor came and slayed creature easily. That' plus Destroyer Plauge and that he wasn't, as I see it, all that happy to create Imperium of easygoing billions rulled by Emperor, was enough for him to join Horus.

except that he was dying as he tried to reach his prey and knew he couldn't complete his goal (the emperor saved his life) also the destroyers plauge was after he turned traitor at istvaan
